NPC Names
NPC Names
I asked this question on DZ, but got booted (again) before the answers came back:
What are the origins of the crit names in Drak? in particular the red NPCs?
I can use my imagination with some...such as "Ainus" but others leave me baffled?

some clearly go together: keep macers named; Kukla, Fran & Ollie (for us old folks, I guess)
Cob NPC's: Beowulf, Grendal, Hrothgar (for us somewhat literary folks, I guess)
Nork NPC's: "oh,Dude! A hog!" (you'll know it when you see him)
and one of my faves "Dipustruoy" (for those of us who can't quite spell backwards)

Then npc is named barrabas an imposter for sure, the real one is named
Barabbas and as you pointed out is rarely seen. The npc draws my wraith
every time as I's sure it draws the bara haters out there to attack.

I'm certain that some of the names come from someone's high school days. Jim Hall was probably a class bully or jock and one of the original coders seeked revenge by arranging for him to die numerous times in nork. Mr Hobart was probably someone's teacher.
One name in particular I think was a mistake. Its not uncommon even back in the golden old days of computing to use simple front end software to populate data bases. Usually when they did that, they prompted the operator by placing some sort of reminder in the field telling them what should go there. Hence the npc named "name". Someone probably hit enter one time too many and never bothered to correct it.
Some of the names, like "dontdie" and "ohthere" seem to suggest brain farts on the part of the people naming the npcs. Others are more devious but I'm sure if you dug, you'd find some of the more ordinary names represent people in the coder's past, that the coder didn't care for.
Btw I've often thought that as an event award it would be cool to change an npc's name to match someone playing.

The one that always cracks me up is Hunanus. Of course the variations on Ethel - Ethelred, etc. are fun, but I keep looking for the Lucy, Ricky and Fred variations too.:p

If Practice makes perfect, and nobody's perfect, then why practice?
If ignorance is bliss, why aren’t more people happy?
What are those little things on the end of your shoelaces called?
and finally...
If money is the root of all evil then how come churches ask for it?

The name "ohthere" occurs in Beowulf. It's also the name of a scandinavian explorer, which is probably why it showed in Beowulf to begin with. It's a variation of Ottar or Oscar. A lot of Timmy crits are from Beowulf. The ma types seem to have Egyptian/Middle eastern names.

The developers of one of those big online RPG's, not UO or EQ, might've been the MSN one, named one hostile critter-type , a disgusting slug, the jimwilson, after a hostile reviewer.

I find it interesting that "Rakshasa" is an Indian demon.
In an Indian folktale he is "black as soot, with hair yellow as the lightning, looking like a thunder-cloud. He had made himself a wreath of entrails and he wore a sacrificial cord of hair; he was gnawing on the flesh of a man's head and drinking blood from a skull."
In other stories, Rakshasas have formidable tusks, flaming hair, and insatiable hunger. They wander about forests catching animals and eating them.
In the Hindu religion, the monkey-god Hanuman goes to the city of Lanka to search for Sita and he sees rakshasas of many varied kinds. Some were rather disgusting in appearance, others quite beautiful. Some had very long arms of odd shaping and were fat, thin, tall, and short.
Rather interesting, isn't it? The places were Brad has placed Rakshasas in Drakkar are rather interesting. Forests, Dungeons, and Tehruh. And, some of them have the lightning ability while others have assault. Isn't that just neat? And the Rakshasa "god" (reggie) is quite powerful him/herself!
