Lots of info on this topic. I started late 1988, though my earliest manual dates to 1989, and this was like Brad said on the pdp11. Sometime thereafter, 1990ish or so, the game was ported to UNIX.

Why does it have to have manufactured chaotic-ness? Starting fresh as a level 1 with zero help other than from other level 1s would be chaotic enough for 90% of the Drakkar community. Removing chits, removing guildhalls, sissy-pansy skill gains. That would own, and I know Brad's itching to do it. &q...

Complete crit wipes would be interesting. It will never happen though. But I'd be the first one to offer up my high level crit as a sacrifice to make the game playable again. I also doubt I'm the only one. I've been slammed by certain Sysops lately for criticizing without providing solutions, so her...

Thanks for the reply flisk and Mars. I really do appreciate that we can talk about these issues openly. Just for the record, flisk you in your sysop function have always treated me and my friends with the utmost professionalism. Thank you. If Drakkar was the same game it was 18 years ago when some o...

State of the game, pt. 1
What makes a good game? Well, duh - one that's fun, right? Well, true. That's very important. But one person's version of "fun" is so much different than another's. I'd say the deeper people get into a game, the less superficial "fun" they have with it. It becomes more rewarding,...

That's an awful explaination. What Tirith did was this: Firebreath himself a bunch of times right before he bought fire dancing, got an average, then IMMEDIATELY AFTER he firebreathed himself - AFTER buying fire dancing, and then saw the average was higher. The only thing that changed was the purcha...

There are two missing scrolls from the Mausoleum quest. They were removed from the game after the quest was solved. One was a coded message, the other was one of the steps in decoding it. The other steps can still be found on scrolls in the game (why they all weren't removed, I don't know). The enti...

Some of my fondest memories in this game include Fred/Megaboz and myself returning to Drakkar about 9-10 years ago after a few years off, meeting up with several JIHADs, including TKD and Chakka. Running around "healing" TKD in KM4 (yeah right), following him as he looped around the level ...

Anyone play fantasy sports?
JIHAD and friends has a Football league running this season, and we had football and basketball last year. I am really surprised how much fun it is, and how it makes meaningless games like Cincinnati vs. Pittsburgh so interesting :) So anyone here play fantasy sports? If so where do you play, what s...

That means that you WILL gain quirk "points" by being in combat (grunting), but not by simply standing there doing nothing. Webster's definition for serendipity: "The faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident." This seems to suggest quirks will come RANDOMLY. Grunting ...

But you see what I mean about "uniqueness"? I'd dare say that 95% of the thieves are going to choose option "B" (if they can only pick one), since fast killing is what generally they are there for..
On paper it looks great though, three unique choices.

- You can't "grunt" for quirks. They will appear at random, meaning there is little sense of accomplishment in gaining them, totally going against the way the rest of Drakkar has worked for the last 17 years. - Sysops will hand them out, so make sure you're in their guild or good side sinc...

Here's a good way to steal loot. Grab an invis twig, head to an area rich with loot. This works best in upper, pillars, uc3.5, and such. Go invis. Be careful to avoid players using area or on-hex attacks like firebreath or earthcrush. Then, to be sure no one notices what you're doing, take note of h...

Don't you get it Doro? Follow the progression to it's logical conclusion. Here's what he is doing, and why: 1) Make virtually all combat actions damage gear. 2) Force players to repair gear MUCH more often than they used to. So what if it's not fun. 3) Introduce a way to slow this process (quirks) 4...
